Meet Rex Grossman, Starting QB for the Redskins
A lot of people have asked for my reaction to Donovan McNabb getting benched and Rex “Sex Cannon” Grossman getting the start against Dallas this week. OK, a few people did. Or one. Fine, in actuality no one did. But I am going to talk about it anyway.
My flip one-liner response that came to me right after I heard the news was this: Wow, I would care if it was still football season.
That pretty much sums up my feelings. This is a 5-8 team in late December. Or are they 5-9? Who cares. The point is, the season’s over. At this point, we might as well be playing our 4th preseason game. The head coach and offensive coordinator clearly don’t care for the QB they traded those draft picks for (/swallowing rage) and want to see what the backup can do. They are already preparing for next year, which is fine by me. Get this year over with.
McNabb clearly isn’t the answer, unless the question is “what Redskins QB went 5-8 (or maybe 5-9) during the 2010 season?” The team has a lot of holes. Rex Grossman went to precisely as many Super Bowls as Donovan McNabb in prior years. Let see what he has. Let him Unleash the Dragon. I want Rex Grossman to look at the running back during a screen pass and think to himself, “Fuck it, I’m goin’ deep.” To be honest, I am more likely to watch the team with Grossman than with McNabb. Why? Because at least now I know they’ll lose, it won’t be close, and I don’t need to stress about it. I wanna watch him toss it up deep to Moss and Armstrong 15 times. They’ll get creamed, but it’ll be entertaining.

I used to have McNabb on a FF team years ago. He is a tough guy to rely on because he is either on fire or total shit. Redskins just seem to be struggling the past few years. They have a few decent players and then trade them, or drop them. It may be time for a new coaching staff. They really need to get back to running the ball, Riggins style. Once they get the ground game going again (they may need to draft some OL players this year) they can air it out.
Aren’t QB woes the worst? Especially when your team has been completely consumed by the drama and let downs. Believe me, I can relate. I live in Minnesota. We have it a bit worse since we don’t really have a QB lined up for Monday nights game against the Bears at the UM since the Metrodome collapsed (see it always CAN get worse). From what I have read, Favre is done, T-Jax (worst QB in Vikings history) is hurt and the back up Webb, is either gone or they told him not to bother. The names floating around are Patrick Ramesy and a few others. Cullpepper (yep, Daunte) said he didn’t think he could be ready by then. Well, a three day notice is a bit tough to work with.
It’s funny because I can’t remember a time when the Redskins were really solid at quarterback. I mean, Brad Johnson is probably the closest I can come in recent years. All the way back into the early 90’s – no one. Their later Super Bowls, 4 years apart, came with 2 different QBs, neither of whom started for more than 4 seasons if I’m correct (not for the Skins, anyway). I guess Joe Theismann is the last long-term QB we had. Wow. It’s been a while.
I feel for Vikings fans this year. They’ve been jerked around by everyone.
I actually really liked Brad Johnson. He was decent, but he was not the QB for the Redskins. I don’t get how with all that money the owner has, they cannot get a decent coaching staff. Yes, they hire NFL relics that have been great in their time. But, they don’t fit in the current NFL. What kind of coach does Snyder want? I think he needs to go back to the basics and get a good mud running RB, QB that can take a hit and a defensive minded head coach that does not have a huge ego. If Del Rio gets canned they should pick him up. He is brilliant, just with a shitty team in Jax. Heck, I named my first Boxer after Jack when he was our MLB. He knows the game. I would hope the Vikes would reach out to him as well, but I don’t think they will be around next year.
With all of Snyder’s money, why can’t he assemble a great team? I don’t get it. Is it because he can’t keep his nose out of the business (ala J.Jones style)?
I think you hit the nail on the head with the last line – Dan Snyder just can’t keep out of the football side of the business. Part of me can understand – he’s a HUGE Redskins fan, and just wants the team to win, so he’ll do anything to help them win. Unfortunately, he’s also impatient, so the best thing for him to do (keep out of the football side, sign the checks, and let a veteran front office handle it) is the hardest thing for him to do. I don’t have a problem with Shanahan, and I think he’ll have a decent run as coach. He was just put in a bad situation (the team has a TON of holes) and the fact that the last 4 years of draft picks have yielded very little in depth or impact starters. I think they’ll be competitive next year, a playoff contender the year after, and a team with a shot at the Super Bowl the year after that. I still have SOME optimism, heh.
Rex Grossman??? isnt that like having a QB named Eugene Finklestien?? WTF kinda QB name is that? you need a Bart Star, Joe Montana or Colt McCoy.
