It’s That Time of Year Again….

It’s National Novel Writing Month, and I will be hip-deep in the endeavour to write 50,000 in the next 30 29 days.  I’ll post excerpts here as I go, as well as on my Facebook page.  I wish everyone else doing it this year the best of luck, and let’s go win this thing!

Five Things for a Weird Tuesday, Oct 26th

I haven’t done a “5 Things” post in a while (small bits of stuff that don’t warrant a full blog post, but allow me to write something), but since I’ve been sporadic and feeling guilty about it, I decided to do one today.

1.  A very strange day.  Out of the blue, I got a Facebook message from an aunt on my father’s side.  I don’t recall ever speaking to her or meeting her, although it’s possible I did when I was very very young.  When my Dad died when I was 7, we pretty much lost all contact with his side of the family (and the majority of my mother’s side as well, long story).  One of his brothers, Phil, kept in occasional touch, mostly because he was executor of my grandparent’s estate, and when they died I received a small sum of money, along with all his other grandchildren.  In the space of a few hours, my aunt and I exchanged a few emails.  She’s a hospice nurse with lots of children and grandchildren.  It was nice to finally “meet” my father’s sister.

Writerly Advice

Every writer, the world over, struggles often.  Finding the right word, or most elegant way to phrase a thought, or breathing life into a character whose only existence is among the carefully arranged symbols of an alphabet.  It can be maddening, liberating, and soul-crushingly depressing all in the span of seconds.  The blank white space of the paper or screen can mock and goad.  The specter of the dreaded writer’s block hovering over every pause and momentary mental blank-out.

One thing no writer is ever short of, though, is advice. Read the rest of this entry

Current Events

Since it’s been a little while since I’ve done a blog, I figured I’d go ahead and fill you in on the EXCITING and TUMULTUOUS EVENTS (or lack thereof) that have taken place.

Football: The Redskins won yet another ridiculously close game.  Out of 5 games, 4 of them have come down to the final play.  Only when they got hammered by the Rams, who lost 44-6 or something this week to the previously 0-4 Lions, was the outcome of the game not in doubt on the final snap.  Heart attack central, this team.  But since they are 3-1 in those nail-biters, I’ll take it for now. Gently Rapping Your Head Against a Brick Wall, AKA Getting a Publishing Agent

Have you ever wanted to inflict yourself with crippling self-doubt? Perhaps you enjoy your current job, but miss the feeling of receiving rejection letters or simple stony silence? Does poring over a business form letter to ensure that it somehow manages to be both professional and stands out from the crowd all at the same time sound like a lot of fun to you? Then I have a suggestion for YOU! Try to get yourself a publishing agent! Read the rest of this entry

Man, He Works Fast

In one day, the cover art goes from black and white to this:

Daevan and Troius, in color

Am I pysched?  Hell yeah.

New Cover Coming

In The Curse of Troius: A Zombie Fantasy Novel news, a new cover is in the works!  I am very pleased to be working with Christopher Stewart (if “working with” means letting his talent do all the work) on the new and vastly more interesting and exciting cover.  I can’t wait for it to be done, since the Black and Grey cover is a bit, uh, plain.

JulNoWriMo

I decided to try to do a Novel Writing Month in July.  50,000 words was my goal.  I failed.

It’s OK, really.  I was just trying to motivate myself to write more of the sequel, to make it a priority.  I ended up writing almost nothing during weekends, and I think that’s what cost me.  I’m at around 40k, though, and that’s a good chunk of the sequel.  I want this one to be around 100k-120k words or so, and I think that’s feasible.  In order to tell the story in my head, it may have to be more.

I’ll keep going through August as much as possible.  It’s been difficult folding in the writing with the new fitness regime, which takes a lot of time and energy.  The results have been worth it though.  If I can do 30k a month for August and September, I’ll pretty much be done.  I still would like to have the sequel sellable by the end of October, so I need to keep slogging away.  Ain’t easy.

Chapter 5 Excerpt from The Siege of Anticus: A Zombie Fantasy Novel

New material time! Again, not edited, probably bad.

Lieutenant Villios called the troop to a halt at Boulden’s gesture. He told the sergeants to get their troops armored and ready, then moved over to where the commander was looking over the map of Northreach with Herndin. Boulden’s thick-knuckled finger was settled on a spot north of Anticus, labeled in a spidery hand with the name of Brethford.

“That’s it,” the commander said, “first place we’ve reached that the Baron’s boy mentioned as a possibility. We might not find a damn thing, in fact that’s what I‘m hoping for. But I want to be ready for anything.” Read the rest of this entry

Dam surveyed the wreckage that his home had become. As he’d feared, his slide into the canyon had made it impossible for him to give warning to his fellow villagers in time, and devastation looked complete. The temple had burned, taking the nearby houses with it, and from the quantity of blackened corpses within the smoking ruin, it looked like most of the village had burned inside with it.
